Primary & VPK Program: Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions About Our Programs for 4-5 Year Olds Answered
We understand that choosing the right educational environment for your child is a significant decision. We solve those questions with our VPK & Primary FAQ. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about our Primary and VPK programs for children aged 4-5.
What is the main difference between the Primary and VPK programs?
While both programs cater to the same age group (4-5 year olds), the key differences are the curriculum and the length of the school day.
- Primary Program: This is a full-day, authentic Montessori program. The curriculum is child-led and individualized, allowing students to progress at their own pace. Students in this program typically master concepts and skills that are well in advance of state standards.
- VPK Program: This is a half-day program that follows the curriculum mandated by the State of Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program. It is designed to prepare children for kindergarten.
- We recommend: that families enroll VPK half‑day students in the Montessori program as well. This ensures children continue to develop a self‑directed love of learning through Montessori’s child‑led approach, which complements VPK’s teacher‑directed, standards‑focused instruction. Together, the two programs create a seamless bridge to long‑term academic and social success..
Are the teachers in the Primary and VPK programs certified?
Yes, all of our teachers at Guardian Montessori Academy are certified and have received specialized training in early childhood education and the Montessori method. We are committed to providing your child with the highest quality of instruction and care.
Does the school have security cameras?
The safety and security of our students are our top priorities. We have video recording in all student areas of our school to ensure a safe and transparent environment. Further we have a station where parents can come and view their children learning without interrupting their class.
Will my child be more advanced if they attend the Primary program instead of a standard VPK?
Research and our own experience strongly suggest that a Montessori education provides a significant academic and developmental advantage. A study published in the journal Science found that Montessori students at age five demonstrated advanced reading and math skills, as well as more developed social-emotional skills, compared to their peers in traditional preschools. [2] Students graduating from our Primary program are not only exceptionally well-prepared for kindergarten but often possess a deeper understanding of concepts and a greater love for learning.
What are the benefits of a Montessori education for a 4-5 year old?
The Montessori method offers numerous benefits for this age group, including:
- Fostering Independence and Confidence: Children are encouraged to do things for themselves, which builds self-esteem.
- Developing Concentration and Focus: The hands-on, self-directed nature of the activities helps children develop a remarkable ability to concentrate.
- Nurturing a Love of Learning: By allowing children to follow their interests, we cultivate a lifelong passion for discovery.
- Building a Strong Academic Foundation: The curriculum is carefully designed to introduce complex concepts in a concrete and understandable way.
How can I learn more about the Montessori philosophy?
We encourage parents to explore the principles of Montessori education to understand its profound benefits. Here are some excellent resources:
- Montessori Guide: An online resource for parents and educators with detailed information about the Montessori method.
- The National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector: Provides research and information about Montessori education.
